Thewatch is powered by a quartz digital movement that offers an accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month. This is actually rather quite good. And in addition, the movement is of course extremely durable and can handle knocks, bangs, and shocks. To help with legibility, in particular in the dark, the Casio G-Shock DW-5600E-1V has a green backlight

The G-Shock series of watches has always been a very popular choice for people looking for a robust timepiece that’s still impressively affordable. As with many G-Shock watches, you can expect 200m water resistance and a durable finish. This watch is also certified by NASA for space missions, that’s not something I get to say about many watches. Click on any image to head straight to the product page for prices and specifications Anyway, I’ll get on with my Casio DW-5600E review below and you can find out the price on Amazon today, enjoy. At the bottom of the article, I’ll show you some of my recommended places to buy this watch from My Initial Thoughts On This Watch I’ve always rather liked the G-Shock series, I feel the offer some pretty good value for money when you take everything into account. The G-Shock watches were built to withstand mechanical shock and vibration. This makes them an ideal sports or military style watch, perfect for those who love their outdoor activities. The watch is rather simple and reliable, there’s a luminescent backlight for easy reading at night, plus a useful stopwatch and alarm function. While it doesn’t look as oversized as some other G-Shock models, this may actually be something people prefer. As we often find on G-Shock watches the casing is made of stainless steel and wrapped in a defensive resin to offer better protection. If you were after something practical then the G-Shock DW-5600E seems to make a lot of sense to me. Movement The watch utilises a reliable quartz movement that has a 2 year battery life using a one battery system. Quartz movements are great as they remain accurate and reliable without the need for much in the way of service. Type of glass The DW-5600E uses a toughened mineral glass that’s ideal for this style of watch. Mineral glass offers a good level of scratch resistance and is ideal for shatter resistance. It’s fair to say sapphire glass would offer much better scratch resistance but it lacks the same shatter resistance that mineral glass has, and when you’re making a watch to withstand drops, then mineral is the clear choice to go for. Size I mentioned earlier on that this isn’t your typical oversized G-Shock watch, you’ll actually be able to fit this under the cuff of your shit easier, shocking right? The watch has a casing diameter of 42mm which brings it more in line with a standard men’s watch. The thickness of the case is 13mm which is just a little larger than average and avoids going totally overboard. Calendar There’s a handy day-date and month display available on this timepiece. The beauty of a digital watch is how easy it is to offer an automatic calendar feature. Whereas on traditional watches you’d often have to adjust the date for the varying amount of days in each month, this digital watch adjusts it for you automatically. Watch strap and clasp The watch strap is made of a synthetic resin that’s perfect for wrist straps due to its very durable and flexible properties. It fastens using a standard buckle system with a stainless steel clasp. The strap itself measures 28mm wide which makes it notably bigger than a normal strap, this adds to the watches reassuring durable feel. Water Resistance The water resistance rating is a brilliant 200m, or 20ATM. 100m water resistance makes it suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving. Features Brand Casio G-Shock Model DW-5600E Dial Window Material Mineral Glass Clasp Type Standard buckle style clasp Case Material Stainless Steel with resin Case Diameter 42mm Case Thickness 13mm Band Material Synthetic resin Band Width 28mm Calendar Day /date /month display Movement Quartz Movement Water Resistance Rating 200m Conclusion So there we have it, an affordable digital watch that NASA has certified for us on its space missions, all things considered, that’s pretty impressive. If you were after a nice digital watch that was easy to use with handy features then this G-Shock watch may be perfect for you. I Hope you found this Casio G-Shock DW-5600E review useful and enjoyable, comment below and let me know what you think of it. Where to buy the G-Shock DW-5600E I like to stick to listing retailers that I’ve actually had experience buying from in the past. Below I’ve listed some of the top places to buy this watch from, check all 3 for the best price. It’s hard to beat G-Shock in terms of ruggedness. As a matter of fact, I think their logo should appear next to “Bombproof” in the dictionary. Unfortunately, the majority of G-Shock watches are humongous, making us slender-wristed folks feel a bit left out. However, there’s still a ray of hope for small wrists; the Casio G-Shock DW-5600. In this article, I will explain why I think it’s the best G-Shock watch for small wrists! MeasurementsG-Shock DW-5600Case Diameter43mmLug-to-Lug49mmCase Thickness13mmLug Width23mm As someone with small wrists, I scoured the internet for a tiny G-Shock, but most people recommended getting a Baby G instead. As I was about to step on my last bit of manliness and get a Baby G, an angel came down from heaven the DW-5600. Its square case makes this G-Shock wear extremely small, so it looks amazing on my wrist. As you can see above, there’s no lug overhang, no strap that sticks out too much, it’s just perfect! Although it fits on small wrists, I still consider the DW-5600 a bulky piece. You might have difficulty sliding it under shirt cuffs, and you will definitely feel its presence all day. Fortunately, it’s very comfortable despite the bulkiness, which makes it the perfect tool watch. SpecificationsG-Shock DW-5600Movement3229 ModuleWater Resistance200m / 20 barScreenLCDFunctionsStopwatch, Timer, Alarm, EL Backlight Just because it’s small and affordable doesn’t mean the DW-5600 isn’t as good as other G-Shocks. Of course, it doesn’t have a fancy GPS system or atomic clock like higher-end models do, but it can compete in every other way. For instance, it has 200m of water resistance, which is now G-shock’s standard. This means that you can take your DW-5600 underwater every single day and it will feel at home, even at deeper levels. The Casio 3229 module powering the DW-5600 keeps time with a basic quartz movement. Accordingly, it will be accurate to around +-15 sec/month. Considering the fact that it has a pre-set calendar up until 2099, you will basically only have to set the day & date about once a year. Depending on which functions you use, the battery should last 2-5 years. Speaking of which, the DW-5600 has three main functions; Stopwatch, Countdown timer, and alarm. The one I use the most is definitely the countdown timer. Whether it’s to measure cooking time, a meditation session, or something similar, you will certainly find a reason to use this function at least once a day. After that, the alarm function is probably the one I enjoy the most. I use it mostly on trips when I don’t have access to my regular alarm clock, or if I want to make sure that I’ll wake up even if my cellphone battery dies. I’m not a sporty person so I barely use the stopwatch, but I think runners and gym-goers will certainly find this function to be vital. One function I do find myself using quite a bit is Casio’s famous electro-luminescent backlight. This one provides a bright green light that will outshine any traditional analog watch lume. DesignG-Shock DW-5600StylingTool WatchMaterialResinCaseSquare Although the word G-Shock is now often associated with bulky round watches with tons of buttons, the original G-Shock was actually square. Indeed, Casio introduced the DW-5000 square G-Shock in 1983 to get into the rugged watches industry. As you can see below, the original G-Shock is almost indistinguishable from the DW-5600. It might be a bit weird to say for a digital watch, but I think it can be described as a vintage timepiece. What makes the square G-Shock so popular is its simplicity and straightforward looks. There’s no extra touch to make it stylish, but this is what gives it all its charm. As Casio mentions on its website “The DW5600 can be worn from the skate park to the office.” This square G-Shock is sold in a plethora of colorways, but I feel like the matte black version is the most appealing. Not only is it the original colorway of the DW-5000, but this matte black case gives it an understated look that matches the basic vibe of the watch. However, you can get the DW-5600 for $40-$50 on most websites. For such a cheap price, nothing’s stopping you from buying 2-3 different colorways to match your outfit of the day. At this price point, I think the G-Shock DW-5600 can be seen as a premium Casio F91-W with added ruggedness and a slightly better brand recognition. As you can see in my wrist shot above, this watch is my favorite when it comes to changing car tires, putting together a piece of Ikea furniture, going to the gym, etc… The resin case and bracelet are almost indestructible so you should expect your DW-5600 to keep on running for dozens of years, even if you take it through hell and back. It’s also quite surprising how classy this G-Shock can be. Its small size, square case, and understated styling make it fly under the radar. Of course, it won’t compete with a Grand Seiko, but it’s definitely the best-suited G-Shock for a business-casual outfit. In conclusion, I think the Casio G-Shock DW-5600 is undoubtedly the best bang-for-the-buck G-Shock watch on the market. Also, it might be the only model that’s perfectly suited for small wrists. Fortunately, it has all the important features that you’d expect from any other G-Shock pieces. Priced below $50, you can’t really go wrong with the DW-5600, and I also think that it will make a perfect gift for men of all ages including teenagers. Decades ago, when I was a wee middle schooler, I owned one watch a Casio G-Shock. I used to play around with it a lot. Its plastic band reminded me of those limited-edition Burger King Rugrats watches, and I loved pressing its metallic buttons to hear it beep. The backlight gave me the same vibes as those weird bendy light bulbs you could buy to attach to a Gameboy Color. Because of these memories, I’ve always associated G-Shock with a level of fashion nostalgia—something highly recognizable but tinged in novelty. Yet here we are, 21 years later, and that watch is still en vogue. The Casio G-Shock DW5600E-1V, which the company refers to as the “quintessential” G-Shock, has been a bestseller since its market debut in 1996. The water-resistant watch is based on the original G-Shock that was introduced in the 80s and has kept the same features and aesthetic since day one a square face, an alarm, backlight, timer, stopwatch, shock absorption, and an annual calendar. Curious how the DW5600E has made it this far without fading into obscurity, I grabbed the $70 watch for myself. I had to find out Why on earth is this watch still so popular? What I like about the Casio G-Shock DW5600E-1V Credit Reviewed / Kevin Cortez The G-Shock DW5600E is a minimal tech-friendly timepiece. I really like how the DW5600E looks—slim and minimal. Most of today’s digital watches look bulky and aggressive—usually to showcase that they can survive a ding or two at the gym—but the G-Shock’s slenderness feels refreshing and modest. Chalk that up to its retro style, which embraces technology that might’ve been featured in a movie like Alien. As someone who gets angsty at the amount of times he looks at a screen in one day, this is a relief. Its tools throw back to a time when digital watches didn’t come with Bluetooth capabilities or the ability to remind you of yet another notification to check. I love how looking at this watch feels like a display, and not a screen. I had fun toying with the watch’s alarm clock, timer, stopwatch, and backlight. The beep-beep-beep-beep alarm tone of a G-Shock waking me up in the morning was, again, refreshing compared to my usually loud smartphone alarm. The screen’s backlight, which I found useful even during the day, has a radiant blue glow to it that feels gentle on the eyes. Cycling through and setting the watch’s time and date is easy enough, despite the fact that there’s a lot of G-Shock-specific instructions to learn. I didn’t want to take the watch off. I even wore it in the shower, and it resisted water as intended. I think the nostalgia bug bit me hard here—I fell in love with this watch just like I did when I was a kid. It feels like an affordable beater that’s built to last. Over the course of a week, I casually tested its shock-absorption capabilities while taking breaks at work. I can attest that after tossing the watch up and watching it slam down onto the ground, knocking it against my coffee table and desk, and slapping it with the dull part of a screwdriver, the DW5600E-1V is a truly durable piece of hardware. I also wore the watch while working out and found it super comfortable. The silicone band fit my wrist well and barely slid around during bouts of kettlebell swings. The watch didn’t feel gross or moist when I got sweaty during my workout. I even used the stopwatch function for timing my rests, which felt like a novelty given how simplistic it is. What I don’t like about the Casio DW5600E digital watch Credit Reviewed / Kevin Cortez The DW5600E is built tough, but not indestructible. It goes without saying, but "shock-absorbing" doesn’t mean "invincible." Inspired by Casio’s original G-Shock commercial, in which a professional hockey goalie catches a puck in his mitt while holding the watch, I thought about more extreme ways to test its durability. This led me down a wormhole of YouTube videos where various G-Shock fans drove their cars over a DW5600E and were in awe over its seemingly pristine condition. Excited to do the same—and forgetting the usual "don't try this at home" disclaimer—I ran over the DW5600E with my Kia Soul. The watch broke. This was a bummer because I just didn’t expect it to. I don’t know if that’s truly a strike against the Casio, but obviously, this watch isn’t indestructible. Gratuitous damage aside, the only issue I had with the then-living G-Shock was with its recessed button. To adjust the time and reset the stopwatch or timer, you must press down and hold the watch’s top left button, which in G-Shock terms, is known as button “A”. From there, you can cycle through numbers with the “B” top right and “C” bottom left buttons. The A button is recessed while the others protrude. This is so you don’t accidentally adjust your watch while in movement. The thing is, I found this button hard to intentionally push and scraped my nail against it whenever I needed to hold it down. It was somewhat frustrating to use while exercising and counting down 50-second breaks, as I couldn't do it in an instant and had to fumble to reset my timer. I’ll also say The G-Shock DW5600E-1V used to be cheaper. Less than three years ago, it retailed at around $40. Today, it's $ As much fun as I had with the watch, I don’t believe it's worth a penny over $55—and that’s pushing it. For a barebones digital watch that can’t perform more than a handful of functions, I think about $70 is way too high. Is the Casio G-Shock DW5600E-1V worth it? Credit Reviewed / Kevin Cortez Function and performance with the G-Shock DW5600E are top-notch. Yes, but I wouldn’t pay full price. If you’re looking for a watch that can take a beating and is versatile enough to wear daily, buy yourself a G-Shock DW5600E-1V when it's on sale. Its style, modesty, durability, and nostalgic feel makes it a watch worth owning—even in a market full of smartwatches. Being that it’s such a popular item, it’s fairly easy to find one on sale at less than $55 from retailers like Walmart, Amazon, Kohl’s, and even eBay. If you can swing that price, I recommend grabbing this simple timepiece for some nostalgic flair.
